Sofia GansPhD Candidate, Art History and Archaeologysrg2149@columbia.edu
I am a 4th year PhD student in the art history department at Columbia, studying late medieval sculpture and metalwork. I am writing my dissertation on the tomb of St. Sebaldus in Nuremberg, Germany, a cast bronze monument from the early sixteenth century. I am taking this class to further my understanding of early modern casting techniques, in order to write a dissertation chapter on the casting of St. Sebaldus' tomb. My interests include regional traditions of metal casting in medieval Germany, the use of micro-architecture in liturgical objects and monuments, the cult of saints and pilgrimage in the late Middle Ages, and the issues of classification and periodization of works of art. Additionally, I lecture at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and at the Cloisters, as well as teach K-12 school groups at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
